The visit began as Catherine Atkinson MP was welcomed by Jayne Scattergood, Headteacher at Da Vinci Academy. Jayne gave an introduction to the academy, outlining its ethos and values; respect, kindness and responsibility.
Jayne then led Catherine Atkinson MP on a guided tour of the academy, viewing facilities such as the science laboratories, sports hall and art classrooms.
Catherine Atkinson MP also met with members of the student leadership team, including Head Student Harry and Deputy Head Students, Latae and Jack. During the meeting, Catherine Atkinson MP asked the students about their experiences at Da Vinci Academy and their plans for their future studies and careers. The students also had the opportunity to ask Catherine Atkinson about life as a Member of Parliament and her wider career.
“It was really inspiring to meet Ms Atkinson and have the chance to talk about local issues, her journey into politics and what life as an MP is like. She was open about her experiences, which gave me a better understanding of how decisions are made and how young people can have a voice.
“We also spoke about my own education and career goals, and her advice was really encouraging. The conversation made me think more about the impact of politics on my future.”
“We were very pleased to welcome Ms Atkinson to Da Vinci Academy, providing a great opportunity to showcase our students’ hard work and the vibrant learning environment we’ve created.
“Visits like this help strengthen connections across the wider community and highlight the importance of education in shaping future generations. It was also a valuable experience for our students, giving them the chance to meet a local politician, ask questions and gain insight into how government decisions impact their lives and education.”
“Like parents across Derby, I believe, wholeheartedly, that no limits should be placed on our children and young people’s aspirations. It was therefore fantastic to meet Da Vinci Academy students, Harry, Latae and Jack and hear all about their exciting ambitions for their future.
“School staff play a really important role in giving young learners the confidence to both realise and pursue their full potential. I look forward to continuing to work with staff to provide the opportunities our young people deserve.”
